The Ranch on Silver Creek
Rare Species Habitat Restoration and Monitoring
WRA biologists are conducting extensive monitoring
studies on the 450-acre Silver Creek Preserve in south San
Jose as part of a habitat restoration effort undertaken as
mitigation for a William Lyon Homes, Inc. golf and housing
development. Prior to beginning this monitoring effort, WRA
prepared a comprehensive Restoration and Management Plan as
required by the USFWS and Corps. Special status plant and
wildlife species included in this monitoring and habitat restoration
include: federal threatened bay checkerspot butterfly and
California red-legged frog, federal endangered Santa Clara
Valley dudleya and Metcalf Canyon jewelflower, and federal
species of concern California tiger salamander and Mt. Hamilton
thistle. WRA designed mitigation wetlands, riparian planting
layouts, and native grassland restoration to comply with Corps,
RWQCB, USFWS, and CDFG permits issued for the project. Additional
rare plant and bay checkerspot butterfly annual surveys are
being conducted on an off-site mitigation parcel near Kirby
Canyon in the Coyote Valley.
