The San Joaquin Freshwater Marsh Reserve Enhancement Project is located on 202 acres adjacent to San Diego Creek and the U.C. Irvine Campus in Orange County, California. The Marsh Reserve is owned and managed by the U.C. Natural Reserve System to provide mixed wetland habitat for wildlife and to maintain a natural facility for academic research and student education. Prior to implementation of the Enhancement Plan, the marsh contained a variety of degraded wetland and upland ecosystems including perennial and seasonal freshwater to brackish marsh and ponds; riparian woodlands within the leveed portion of the wetland; and coastal sage scrub areas around the perimeter of the marshland. Phase I of the Enhancement Plan has been completed and included creating a diversity of open water and freshwater marsh habitat, re-grading the levees to impound water at specific depths, removing sediment fans in critical areas, installing a combination gravity-fed/pump station and sediment basin to provide water from the adjacent creek, and re-vegetating marsh and coastal scrub areas. Phase II of the enhancement plan is currently in the permitting stages and will restore hydrologic flows to an additional portion of the wetland that has been divided by levees for many years.
