Cargill Salt Levee
Maintenance Permitting and Biological Studies
As part of the Cargill Salt Levee maintenance permit, WRA designed and implemented the 50-acre restoration of an existing salt pond near Union City. The firm also developed the monitoring and management plan for the site. The pond was an intake pond and required the creation of a new cross-levee to separate the restoration site from the remainder of the operational pond. Entry channel size and configuration were considered in the location of the breach for the wetland. It has been open to tidal action since 2000. The site is currently being used by shorebirds and waterfowl, and supports healthy benthic invertebrate and fish populations. Native vegetation has been planted in portions of the site; however, natural colonization of upper elevations has been rapid. WRA was instrumental in working with the resource agencies to finalize the approval of this site as mitigation for levee maintenance activities.
