Mr. Smick received his Masters degree in Ecology and Systematic Botany from San Francisco State University where he completed a focused study of a group of South American Acanthaceae for his thesis. Part of that work included writing a key to the genus and a description of a newly discovered species from Peru. Mr. Smick has extensive experience surveying and monitoring rare and endangered plants and butterflies in a variety of habitats throughout California including coastal, wetland, grassland, forests, chaparral, and montane communities. Mr. Smick also held Curatorial Assistant positions with both the Botany and Entomology departments at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.

Mr. Smick current focus is on local environmental policies, permitting, sensitive species, banking, and restoration and mitigation projects. He completed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) Wetland Delineation course in April 2005 and has experience delineating freshwater and tidal wetlands throughout the greater San Francisco Bay region, the central California coast, the Central Valley, and the Sierra Nevada. His field experience includes planning and conducting rare plant and butterfly surveys, performing biological resource assessments and wetland delineations, as well as using GPS/GIS to map various biological and geographic features. Mr. Smick has been a project manager at WRA for the past two years where he has managed a diverse array of projects including residential and commercial development, vineyard development, salt marsh and riparian restoration projects, mitigation projects, and land purchase agreements.
