Michael Rochelle, BS/BA
GIS Technician

Mr. Rochelle received his BS in Natural Resource Management/Conservation and BA in Geography from San Francisco State University (SFSU). His interdisciplinary education provided a strong background in chemistry, biology, soil science, geomorphology, economics, statistics, urban studies, climatology, and environmental impact assessment. During his last two years at SFSU, Mr. Rochelle focused on completing the Professional Development Certificate program for GIS. Mr. Rochelle performed his internship at San Francisco's Department of Environment, using GIS to geo-reference the city's database on abandoned waste and created spatial trend maps. For his senior project in Geography, Mr. Rochelle built a model in GIS to determine the safest and most efficient bike routes for San Francisco streets.
Mr. Rochelle's GIS expertise includes the proficient use of analysis tools in both raster and vector formats, the use of Spatial Analyst, 3-D Analyst, and Geostatistical Analyst extensions. While at WRA Mr. Rochelle has managed uptake of GPS data, performed California Natural Diversity Database queries, overlaid impacts for environmentally sensitive features, scanned, geo-referenced, and digitized historical aerial photography to perform trend analysis, and produced soil survey, wetland delineation, FEMA, and biological resources maps. Mr. Rochelle's expertise in watershed and raster-based GIS analysis has helped provide WRA with a framework of tools for Significant Nexus studies. These include determining flow direction, drainage catchment, stream order, and watershed delineations. Mr. Rochelle has also developed an innovative methodology for accurately mapping canopy cover densities using a multi-tiered approach combining both Ecognition software and GIS-based focal statistic analysis with a buffer overlay technique.
